OAKS restaurant and bar in Nottingham has been shortlisted for The Scotch Egg Challenge 2015, the only restaurant north of London to be nominated.
Just 15 establishments around the country have been nominated for the accolade in the traditional category. Chefs will battle it out for the title of best traditional scotch egg in a live cook-off at the Canonbury Tavern in London on the 20th October.
Notable food critics and egg-sperts including Guardian food editor Bob Granleese and the London Evening Standard’s food critic, Fay Maschler, will judge the scotch eggs in what is sure to be a cracking evening.
A firm British favourite, OAKS’ scotch egg sees a quails egg encased in beef surrounded by crispy breadcrumbs. Since the restaurant opened earlier this summer, the dish has been a top hit with diners and reviewers alike and could be set to fly the flag for Nottingham dining nationally.
Head chef at OAKS restaurant, James Hodgkinson, is delighted with the nomination. He said, “We knew we were onto something special when we made these scotch eggs. Using local ingredients truly sets this dish apart from the rest and we’re confident the judges will love our creation.
“It’s a real honour to be the only restaurant in all of the North and Midlands up for the title, I’m so proud of the team here and can’t wait to represent OAKS in the cook-off.”
As well as scotch eggs, the unique dining concept on Bromley Place in Nottingham’s city centre is serving up a signature range of flavoursome handmade sausages created to the chef’s own recipes, with flavours ranging from chicken, asparagus, ricotta, sage and lemon zest to wild boar, purple broccoli and smoked mozzarella served with mashed potato, pretzel buns or chips. The restaurant also offers a whole range of locally sourced dishes, drinks and unique cocktails.
