Evidenced by a history that stretches back to the Neolithic Age, Amman has been occupied without interruption since 7000 BC, one of the few cities able to make such an assertion. This longevity has provided it a heritage populated by biblical figures, Assyrians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Ottomans, Christians, and Muslims. Surprisingly, Amman incorporates characteristics of all these cultures into modern life, whether through historical influences or tangible ones. Known in ancient days as Rabbath-Ammon (city of the Ammonites), Amman was called Philadelphia during its period of Greek sovereignty and was incorporated into the Decapolis, a league of commercial cities, by Roman successors. Arabian forces eventually took control in the 7th century, changing the city's name back to (the slightly altered) Amman. For centuries afterwards, the settlement existed largely as a minor stop on trade routes. In 1921, after ousting the Ottoman occupants, Emir Abdullah bin al-Hussein made Amman his capital, and the city took on a new life. As the result of Middle Eastern conflicts, refugees immigrated to Jordan, and, today, the city originally built on seven hills spreads across twelve more and boasts a population exceeding a million. The region's commercial and financial center is also fondly called the White City, thanks to its pale stone buildings gleaming in the sunlight. Visitors are delighted to find much to explore, from spirited souqs (markets which sell gold, perfume, produce, and exotic goods) to architectural ruins and restorations. The Citadel, site of the original settlement, rests on a hilltop and features a temple, palace, church, and structures dating to the biblical era and beyond. Also notable is the Amphitheater, erected by the Romans and still in use today. A taste of city history is available with a browse through the Jordan Archaeological Museum, the Jordan Folklore Museum, and the Museum of Popular Traditions, all of which preserve a range of cultural artifacts. Other memorable stops include the blue-domed King Abdullah Mosque and the multi-functional Hussein Youth City, which hosts sporting events, cultural activities, and houses a military museum, the Martyrs' Memorial, and the Palace of Culture.
