Ask a local, and you'll likely hear that the name 'Antwerp' derives from the Dutch 'handwerpen,' meaning "to throw a hand." According to lore, a young hero named Brabo fought Druon Antigoon, a malevolent giant who exacted heavy tolls on sailors hoping to take advantage of the harbor's calm waters. Brabo defeated him by cutting off his hand and hurling it into the Scheldt River, symbolically freeing the waterway for generations to come. That tidbit of romanticism aside, historical records indicate that this northwestern Flanders city has played an important role in European trade and commerce as far back as the 16th century. Today, Antwerp is still Belgium's leading port city and one of the primary North Sea passageways to Austria, the French Alps, Italy, and the Rhône region. On any given day, a visitor can stand near the main loading areas and watch as freighters bound for and coming from the Americas, Africa, the Middle East, and East Asia load and unload vast quantities of cargo. From 2000 to 2001 alone, port authorities estimated that more than 260 million tons of cargo passed through Antwerp in addition to more than 90 million tons of containers holding everything from crude oil and fertilizer to paper and breakfast cereals. With an economically strong hinterland and moderate year-round weather, Antwerp also stands as one of Western Europe's most affluent cultural centers, thanks to its many museums and an affinity for music, fine cuisine, and pampered living. Dining in Antwerp requires a true Continental palate since streetside cafés, taverns, and restaurants treat patrons to steamed mussels, fine beer, and other staples of Flemish gastronomy. Must-sees for visitors include the Grote Markt, where a bronze statue of Brabo stands; the Plantin-Moretus Museum, which celebrates the city's contributions to humanism and science via its centuries-old printing industry; the Museum of Fine Arts, with exhibits dedicated to Jan Van Eyck, Brueghel, Peter Paul Rubens, and other Flemish masters; and Antwerp's notable theaters, including the historic Flemish Opera House, Bourla Theatre, and Queen Elisabeth Hall.

Architectural highlights in Antwerp range from Baroque churches to extremely modern buildings along the river that grab your attention with innovative nautical features. For a glimpse into the city's political history, don't miss the grandiose City Hall or the Steen, a medieval castle.
